It's a well-known historical fact that at least 10% of all men died during childbirth after having lectured their spouses about how the pain of labor was nothing compared to that time they hit their toe on that bar room stool.

Historical records show that coroners registered the deaths as either "natural causes" or "what the f... did they even expect would happen?"

Men died, as did women, due to other causes such as disease and famine but if my understanding is correct men mostly died through the violence of war

The other key piece in highlighting the dangers of childbirth is how often women had to give birth. I keep saying that bodily autonomy is THE biggest game changer in the history of the world. There are many aspects to this, but focusing here on the development and right to use the Pill and other birth control, abortion, and the women’s rights movement, that changed everything for everyone. It fundamentally reshaped society. The battle over this continues.

@RickiTarr Actually, right up until doctors were forced to wash their hands, not to bleed their birthing patients, and to sterilise any instruments they used, women were still dying in childbirth pre Crimean War.
Too many male ob/gyn still suck at doctoring, just quietly.
As an avid reader of Historical fiction, I am amazed at how many of my favorite authors (who tend to insert medical facts of the era into their stories) apparently failed to dig up stats in regards to men dying in childbirth. Perhaps they were passed down only by males sworn to secrecy.🤔🤨

There were 3 pregnant women on the Mayflower. One gave birth to a child that lived long and died of old age. One gave birth to a child that died the first winter. And the third died with her stillborn child. Totally normal for the time.

Fun fact (not entirely): in my time in the emergency services, I once witnessed a father's heart stop during the birth of his daughter. He was brought back by the doctor and was extremely lucky because he only had very minor neurological problems as a result. Since then, he has been able to celebrate his birthday with his daughter on that day.
