Well, isn't this interesting. I'd forgotten about the Fairford Five.
They were activists who sabotaged US bombers at RAF Fairford at the start of the Iraq war in 2003.
Their barrister was an up and coming KC by the name of Keir Starmer.

@fkamiah17 @HarriettMB @aral Indeed. We used to live close enough to Fairford to hear the engine scream from the overloaded B-52s as they took off to murder people.
Makes you wonder if younger Keith would even recognise his older self.
@BashStKid @fkamiah17 @HarriettMB Probably would without any trouble. It’s a game to these people. Doesn’t matter which side you’re playing as long as you’re in the game.
@fkamiah17 @HarriettMB @BashStKid @aral Don’t lose sight of the cab rank principle for allocating cases to lawyers in the UK. Keir didn’t choose that case, it chose him.

Send more greeting cards!
Wear more caps!
@warandpeas I wear one every single day due to my combination of shavey head and photophobia (hence also tinted lenses).
In order to wear more, I suppose I could start stacking the caps. Do you sell them in progressively larger sizes? 😜
Neil Cotton, a lollipop man in Howden, Yorkshire, has been ordered by the council to stop high-fiving schoolchildren. The 57-year-old was told that his friendly greetings delayed motorists and stopped young people from focusing on the road. Although, as local driver Tony Brooke told the BBC: “He’s going to hold the traffic up to let the kids across, so I wouldn’t have thought it would add any more time to people’s journeys.”
More than half of the "what's new" in the latest MSVC update is just AI shit. I opened the IDE to write code myself. I've written a large game (including making the sprites, sound effects, and music) by myself. I feel like I'm going insane just by wanting to use my creativity to make things.
@juliancday I never thought I’d end up using a modal editor but I’ve been very happy with Helix for a past few years.
@aral I learned some vi in my teens, I'm not one of the vi golf types, but I can happily use it, and actually do for writing all the Lua code for my game. I'll need to give Helix a try - I've never really heard of it, I've been out of the loop.

If your friends and relatives ask
what we must do
now that the marches are over,
tell them what we must do
is take care of one another,
and if your friends and relatives ask
must we do this
until the next march?
during the next march?
after the next march?
simply reply: yes.
Anyone who unironically uses the term "Bernie Bro" in the big 25 should not be taken seriously. People who are uncritical of the Democratic party shouldn't be taken seriously.
Socialism or barbarism. That is the path we have in front of us. We can either implement ecosocialist working class democracy (and give everyone nice things like free college and access to a doctor), or we can sacrifice our lives on the altar of neo-fascist slavery until climate change ends agriculture as we know it.
Capitalism has delivered us live streamed mass murder, college debt, and shitty car centric infrastructure that kills tens of thousands of people every year.
Fuck that shit, and if you think we deserve that rubbish you are not worth my time
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

#google took down the (centralized) internet
@stux Having been darn near the causing side of this in the past: I feel for the engineer, but the postmortem also smells of "There's a best practice here and the point-person ignored it" (or was insufficiently coached on it or received insufficient oversight implementing on it).
Google is really going to have to grow more discipline around disallowing that. Any kind of annual five-nines guarantee for their entire Cloud offering has been blown out of the water by this one error. For a service as commodity as Cloud: that's bad.
@stux For those who prefer to read the article than watch a video about the article: https://mashable.com/article/cause-internet-outage-google-cloud-what-happened-june-12
Summary: we still don't know, something broke at GCP, but no RCA yet.

@fkamiah17 they’ve seen the effects of a western led coup of their country before. I’m not sure they will want to risk the after effects of that again.
@ginger_tosser Do you really think the west is going to try regime change again after Iraq?
@fkamiah17 they are too dumb to learn. Anyway, war is profitable so what is there to loose? It’s not like the CEO will be on the front line.
🚨 Meta announced today that it will introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This move further consolidates Meta's social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this.

I think I just accidentally recruited a random American in this Starbucks to go to the protest
@0xabad1dea now i think about it, a starbucks is probably *the* place to find americans.
As the dim glow of the slate fades, I reach for the bottle I know to be empty, its contents having quenched a past fury.
Adjusting to the pale blackness, visions of the past dance on the walls; good and bad, my friends and my foes, backlit only by a cold and lonely streetlight.
Lightyears apart, yet closer than ever; inches away, but the distance is growing.
A car crawls slowly past the window, saturating the room in shadows as the icy beams unveil scars old and new, real and unreal.
To jump is to fall, and to sleep is to die; but I will do neither, for I am ready to kill, but too low to try.

* Oculus devices are used to map your house and improve facial recognition software of anyone in your home.
* All Meta apps, when installed, run silently in the background. We do listen and we do read your text. Put your phone on the table, talk about DYI Projects, and I promise you will see ads for DYI Projects.
All of that, we are sharing with the government of the United States of America.
Especially, if you said you dislike Donald Trump, JD Vance, Mike Johnson, and anyone on Trump's cabinet, or previously expressed dislike for Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy, DOGE, ICE, and participated in any protest, spoke out in support of protest, or indicated you could join a protest.

When I was about 4 years old I made up a fictional planet called "Nootube," pronounced "New Tube." Later, some video-sharing startup infringed on my trademark. The owners of the video sharing site in question have yet to pay me for the name.
Haha oh, Marky..
Imagine a network being out there where there are servers in almost every niche, that would be just silly
Or would it be that there is no money to be found 🤔
I guess some people "belong on Twitter"?
The thing is..
It does not really matter that much if #Mastodon does not grow as hard as Bluesky for example
Simply because Mastodon is a part of the #Fediverse and that will grow faster over time
The last few years there has been a major adoption in the use of ActivityPub by other platforms and a dozen new ones!
It's just a matter of time before ActivityPub and therefore the Fediverse is everywhere
I dont see Bluesky do that
@WillyECoyote69 @snow It's SOO much bots these days
It ichtes me so much yikes
@WillyECoyote69 On BS 😉
Since they have those "packs" where you can follow 100 people or whatever at once, these bots spam the whole day everyday
Check left col: https://bskycheck.com/
i think you spot the bots haha
@WillyECoyote69 its a 3rd party site from a dev who made a tracker but i get it 😉
Ah that is so sweet! Only when you can ofc ❤️
Agree.
I'm just an everyday person, not a published writer or tech wiz, I don't care if my posts get any or 5 or 15 or 500 boosts or likes. I'm happy w/ the scale here, not here to become an influencer!!!
Happy w/ the connections I've made here, quality over quantity!
@FallsMom Same ❤️ Personally I dislike the word influencer so much
cant take people seriously if they tell they're a "influencer" 😆
@stux@mstdn.social Never underestimate both people's unwillingness to learn and a cult of personality. 1) The Fediverse needs to be made simple - And by simple, I mean idiot-proof - no thinking or effort required. 2) People go where the people go. Herd mentality is a thing, but it is more than that, you have to have the "right people". Folks can agree the Fedi is great, but if that celebrity or social influencer doubles down, triples down on Twitter or Bluesky, most folks will park themselves, right there.
@stux I think there's something to this. Like, Mastodon as the default, the thing that's always there no matter what.
Mark's dissatisfaction with Bluesky isn't a million miles away from everyone else's. It's got a shit culture — like X, like Reddit, like everywhere else. It's just apparent to him now that there are multiple options and Twitter isn't just the default everyone uses.
The hard part is just ensuring there are lots of big, high capacity instances for folks — like yours.
@rhys Yup!
But ppl with big capital like Mark could start their own if they're not happy with current stuff
And they can make it however they want..
*FOR EXAMPLE
@stux Agreed.
I enjoyed seeing Mark on the Daily Show a while ago. He's happy doing his healthcare stuff for sure, and when Stewart pressed him on doing bigger things to counteract Thiel and Musk etc he just seemed uninterested.
I'd like it if he did more to help foster a better world, but I think as good as he is compared to his peers, he's too far inside the clique to want to help deconstruct it — as maybe this piece indicates: https://www.semafor.com/article/04/27/2025/the-group-chats-that-changed-america
@stux Looking at the current numbers to grow more than Bluesky, Fediverse just has to be more than negative
@stux At this point I rather prefer the fediverse doesn't become popular. It is nice as it is, and if it became popular, we'd start seeing spam, data mining, and god knows what type of money-extraction attempts.
@stux Bluesky is the illusion of a fediverse. It's 3 corporate goons in a trenchcoat trying to trick folks into thinking they're in a decentralized space
@stux self-organizing mesh is kinda my niche these days. Because, I studied AI, and self-organizing systems have always been my thing, And neurons are self-organizing, and inspire to want to create somekind of really cool organic internet overlay that is censorship resistant and cannot be easily taken down. Everyone could have their own neuron.
Thank you L.A. for your resistence! Now we all know what makes ICE melt! 🔥✊
ICE-is
“Stop comparing us to the Gestapo! We're just following orders.” — ICE
boostedThe “we're just following orders” statement is called the Nuremberg defense, claiming they should not be held accountable for their actions as they just did what superiors told them to.
This was rejected as a defense at the Nuremberg trials. Better luck next time!
@ErikUden I'm not even sure that's what they are saying anymore. They are taking selfies with their victims, they glorify it in every way possible. They are not saying that they were following orders, they are saying genocide is cool and fine and you should agree. It is extreme even by nazi standards.
@catraxx @ErikUden The original nazis did the same, cause as long as they're winning there are no consequences and thus it's The Right Thing To Do for the Glory of the Leader, and be elated by proximity.
But when they lose they invoke the same spell: "It was in the name of the leader, he's to blame".
@SusiArnott @Mabande @ErikUden Of something i am likely no longer allowed to mention due to the country i reside in having decided that it is illegal to mention.

@stux @Gargron The thing is they're either selling or just flat out giving that data to the federal government. So I hate to be skeptical here but repercussions seem like they would be a long way off. Like until we get rid of this administration. Yeah, states can sue them, but the feds are just going to turn right around and say nope we're undoing that.

Samoa, an archipelagic country composed of nine islands in the South Pacific Ocean, is on the frontline of climate change.
Rising sea levels, ocean warming & acidification all pose significant threats to the country’s coastal communities.
To help protect its future, the Samoan government announced June 3 that it has enacted a law establishing a marine spatial plan to sustainably manage 100% of its ocean by 2030.

Eight of the dead were children.
